Turn. Turning. TURNT is a compelling triptych by award-winning Dance at Illinois professor, choreographer, and director Dr. Cynthia Oliver that captures movement, memory, and resilience across three distinct yet interconnected works. Tether draws on AfroFuturist imagination and the cultural practice of double Dutch driven by Black girls’ creativity and aspiration. Fallow reflects the urgency and adaptability required to navigate constant uncertainty, while Summon. Sow. Reap contemplates the outcomes of collective labor—both just and unjust—through reflection and renewal.
This richly layered performance is brought to life by a cast of Dance at Illinois alumni and an accomplished team of collaborators, blending choreography, music, visual art, and design into a dynamic sensory experience. Oliver’s global perspective and scholarly depth infuse the work with emotional and cultural resonance. TURNT ultimately invites audiences to witness a powerful journey of recovery, remembrance, and reimagining—an artistic call to return, rebuild, and move forward with renewed purpose.
