“Heart Up! – Increasing Physical Activity in Ischemic Heart Disease Patients Who Report Hopelessness – A COVID-19-Compatible Intervention”
Description: Hopelessness is present in 1/3 of patients with ischemic heart disease and is associated with a 3.4 times increased risk of mortality or nonfatal myocardial infarction, independent of depression. The NIH-funded Heart Up! study promotes self-management of heart disease through physical activity specifically in hopeless patients. A recent NIH supplement further supports examination of whether and how the ongoing RCT intervention limits the negative impact of COVID-19 shelter-in-place and physical distancing measures on key mental, social and behavioral health outcomes.
