Purpose: 

Amniotic Fluid Embolism (AFE) is a life-threatening event.   Those working in the perinatal specialty need an increased awareness of identifying, treating, and managing patients with an AFE.

Objectives: 

  • Describe the clinical presentation and diagnosis of Amniotic Fluid Embolism (AFE).
  • Describe the pathophysiology of AFE.
  • Describe the immediate management of AFE, including roles of clinicians in an interprofessional team.
  • Discuss post-AFE care.
  • Identify options for research and case submission to the AFE Registry.
  • Discuss support for clinicians and family members after the event.
  • Describe best practices in education and simulation for nurses who provide care to patients with AFE
